There are just a couple of not-too-expensive commercial offerings that I think are excellent.
For most pieces of commercial software for common tasks there is an excellent free althernative; sometimes even open source. Here are a few of my favourites.

Many commercial office packages have open source, or at least free, alternatives available. Many of these products are also available across platforms. Many conform to a published, open standard.

Subversion (SVN) is an excellent source control system. It is not perfect, but it is extremely well thought out and lightweight.
There are numerous SVN clients and SVN tools out there to complement that functionality.
